About Los Vagabundos

“A vagabond is an itinerant person. Such people may be called drifters, tramps, rogues, or hobos. A vagabond is characterised by almost continuous travelling, lacking a fixed home, temporary abode, or permanent residence. Vagabonds are not bums, as bums are not known for travelling, preferring to stay in one location.”

I (Heather) left my home in Huntsville, Alabama in 2003 (age 25) on a whim to live in Cancun, Mexico. After arriving, I basically became a street bum, living from day to day and taking life as it came at me.

Miguel left his home in Portland, Oregon in 2004 (age 34) in his 1985 Jeep Cherokee, with his entire life packed inside. He drove the 4,500 miles to Belize, stayed one month, then drove to Cancun, Mexico.

The two of us met on July 26, 2004 and have been traveling together ever since.

We left Mexico in 2005 and have since traveled to Jamaica, Panama, France, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Monaco, Italy, and Spain. We have used several vehicles for these voyages: a caravan, a Hummer, an old-man Benz, a pimped-out PT Cruiser, a Harley-Davidson, numerous planes, trains, boats, buses, and our feet.

We don’t remember how it happened, but we began discussing a trip around the world. We decided to learn to sail, buy a sailboat and circumnavigate the globe. I have never sailed, Miguel has only sailed twice, but he has been around motorboats and was in the Navy for 4 years and has boating and navigation experience.

This will be an account of our adventures.
